cannot select by element anymore

when I try to select an element in an object, it will only selct a face, instead of selcting the while element.

 

I use to be able to select the alement but I must have changed something by mistake...

 

any suggestions?

it sounds like you're stuck in sub-object mode. Try clicking on the name of the object in the modifier list, then clicking on a different object in your scene.
