GI photon radius settings?

A basic question here.

 

I have done manual over rides of the Gi settings for photon maximum sampling radius.

 

In an attempt to decrease render times I noticed if dont check this box, and I believe it lets max choose the sizes, this decreases render times.

 

The quality of the image seems the same. Is there a need to do overides or should one always leave this box unchecked and let max decide the photon radius settings?

If you open the message window and let mr decide what the radius should be, you can read off what the radius is. MR's calculations are quite specific whereas manual settings tend to get rounded off to the nearest whole number.

 

However depending on the scene eg a large scene but the camera is focusing on a particularly detailed area then it may be worth while manually setting the radius.
