AFTER so much of thought and discussions, i feel the people who go towards CAD for modelling has an engineering background, ie those who prefer dimensions to guide thrm accurately in the process...

AND THE ARTISTICAL MIND ..is those who go the MAX ROUTE...just like a POTTER GOES through the process of CLAY modelling.

Is max A DIGITAL POTTER AT WORK.......

GIVE US YOUR VALUABLE OPINIONS .........

it would be easier just to ignore this, but i don't think you meant any harm in your post, so i'll just say that your statement is incredibly simplistic.

why is it that people occasionally associate accuracy and proper dimensions with left-brained 'engineering' type thinking ?

i'm an architect, i use CAD to model because i'm the one usually designing the project - i'm the one creating and coordinating all the construction drawings in CAD, which is far more important and involved than any 3D visualization project needs.

why would i abandon or ignore the accuracy of my work when it is quite easy to maintain while modeling, and is integral to the development of the design ?

This debate is pointless. Firstly, because 3ds max is an accurate tool (if you take into account that people usually don't need anything smaller than 1 millimeter in architecture, also). Secondly, because you can't simply put a label on people and say "you use this app so you think like this". That's too simplistic, as Paul stated above.

People use whichever software they're more comfortable with. Since most people learn some CAD app before going into 3D, it's only natural a lot of them choose to stick with that same software when going 3D. And even that statement cannot be taken as absolute truth.

Bottom line: pointless discussion. Move on.

As was hinted at, different users have different needs. When I started doing visualization I worked in a highly accurate fashion. This was because many of the more complex shapes I was constructing were destined to become the basis for what the CAd drawings would be built off of.

Now, CAD software has yielded to BIM software, and the complex shaped can be directly created in the software that will be used to create the CD's.

So today, I do not have to be accurate in my modeling. In fact, I only do about 15-20% of the modeling that I used to. My job these days is more about the final product, and not the creation of the pieces for the final product. Designers and Junior Designer do nearly all of our modeling.

But, even though I free form model more today, it is not to say that my models are completely inaccurate. All of those years I spent doing precision modeling helped to devloop my eye so that I can do rough modeling today, and still have the porportions and dimensions feel correct.

But bottom line, ...people model for what their final needs will be. Visualizations only need to be close. Items that will be part of the construction set need to be accurate.
