Stan Zaslavsky
Hi all, is there a good tutorial on how to create a nice looking furry rug in mental ray? (maybe something that will look like this: http://www.housetohome.co.uk/imageBank/cache/c/Clocks8.jpg_e_c05121baa6f7e87f42266c0662e4a480.jpg) i've tried the hair and fur modifier - but it didnt work too well for me and it took forever to render. thanks for your help. raziel
Thats a great question, all the good carpet renderings that i have seen are done with Vray. I would also like to know how to do fluffy rugs in mental ray. I have tried to play around with the hair and fur modifier, and like you, i was not successful. Lazarus
I think that the hair&fur modifier can produce good results when you get the hang of it. I found out that if you convert the hair into mesh(tool rollout) it greatly reduces the render times, but it will greatly increase the scenes polygon count so it maybe best to have the rug on a different file and import it as a mr_proxy into your scene. Stan Zaslavsky
thanks lazar - i would still like to find a different solution. in vray hair&fur works pretty well - but i'm using mr in this image. i'll try the grass-o-matic script - will let u know how it goes
Stan Zaslavsky
i've worked it out - slightly different method - but similar in some ways. i used a model of a grass patch, applied a shaggy rug material, made it into a proxy and then i arrayed it across the top of a base volume box - and then render. i tried out the scatter for mr proxy - but it wasnt working for me as well as i wanted. the above is lots quicker to render than hair&fur - so i'm happy thanks again for all your comments
Dave Buckley
are you going to show the result

Dave Buckley
i like the red suede-like material the most in that render but yes the rug works well. i know this isn't a thread about your render, but that image outside the window is throwing me a little bit and i don't know why
Stan Zaslavsky
thanks dave. i'm sure my next rug will be better - this one works for the purpose of the image. the image outside is streetscape as is - what about it throws you off? is it the overexposure? Dave Buckley
i guess it was the height of the background image and me not knowing the context of the rendering. but if you were to say its a 1st floor apartment then the feeling of being higher than the houses across the street would make sense
Stan Zaslavsky
Hey Dave, its actually a penthouse apartment on the 2nd floor so yes that's why the view is from a higher elevation - hope this helps. anything else on the image that you think can be improved? cheers
Dave Buckley
its looking pretty good, the only things i can comment on atm are the cushions (i think they need more creases??) and the image seems slightly 'cyan-y' just a slight colour balance adjustment in photoshop should sort that out. i know a blue cast is a natural phenomena and all that but the reflections in the floor etc look a little too blue hope it helps. looks good though
Stan Zaslavsky
cool - thanks Dave. the "cyan-y" effect is from PS - i applied a cyan tint - might tone it down though. thanks for the comments in any case
Dave Buckley
oops sorry, yeh tone it down just a touch, however, it could well be my screen, using an awful screen at the minute and i know it's wrong because my white's aren't white in my colour palletes

Lazarus
Stan, that's a nice render....but i'm not sure if i can classify that as a fluffy rug ....Here's the result i got with the hair&fur modifier(the procedure mentioned before). Tell me what you think of it.
Crazy Homeless Guy
Hi all, is there a good tutorial on how to create a nice looking furry rug in mental ray? Messing with the hair and fur modifier today to see if I could replicate the carpet in the referenced jpeg. I am getting there. I need to shorten the length of the hairs, and try and get them more "tufty" feeling, and I might have it. This was rendered with Mental Ray, but with no FG or GI. RAM consumption is still very high though. Still to much for a straight production render, but might be useful if comped in.
Stan Zaslavsky
Hi all, Lazar - now thats a great fluffy rug - a little too fluffy for my liking, how long did this image take to render out? i assume you used MR? And Travis - your rug is even fluffier - you mention that RAM consumption was pretty high - what sort of time did it take to render this one out? thanks for showing some of your works
Crazy Homeless Guy
And Travis - your rug is even fluffier - you mention that RAM consumption was pretty high - what sort of time did it take to render this one out? I was running about 6.5gb's of RAM on it. Not sure on the render time, I was in the other room watching the Super Bowl. I was also using Puppet Shaders for the materials in this scene. I am uploading the scene I based the settings of of. It renders fast. I would upload my scene, but I am a little embarrassed by the sloppiness of RAM consumption, and want to tweak it more. The attachment has the Bone Studio setup scene, and you will need to Google for the Puppet Shaders if you don't already have them.
Lazarus
Lazar - now thats a great fluffy rug - a little too fluffy for my liking, how long did this image take to render out? i assume you used MR? The scene was rendered in MR, on a Intel core2 quad(q9550@2.83Ghz). render times were 5min40sec. for the first render, and 6min40sec. for the second.Everything on default settings, AA min 1/4 max 4 box filter,FG enabled/draft preset, GI enabled/default settings. Resolution 640x480px And these render times are after converting the hairs into mesh....before that the render times were greater by 4 times. jinsley
I know this has been dead a few months, but I just wanted some feedback if you guys are available... jsut a simple test scene to try and get ready for an upcoming project. rendered with hair and fur using the instance node and a simple strand of fibre modelled with enough sub divs to allow it to curve nicely... lit by photometric ies lights for the night shot morning daylight... using MR sun and sky and photometrics... Stan Zaslavsky
i'm not sure if you can add an opacity mask to the base material to hide the edges a little bit .. looks like the hairs of the rug were stuck on a piece of thick material .. but your hair&fur rug looks fantastic - good job. how long did it take to render out? Thx Stan... I see what you mean, will look into that I guess I could convert the hair and fur to a mesh and then either scale back the base or use an opacity map... I would guess that it rendered in about 10 - 15 mins on 8 cores using ~1.2 gigs of ram. I can time it after easter when I give it another go... Stan Zaslavsky
even for approximate time - thats excellent time for hair and fur - mine was taking 1hr+ at which point i stopped it .. i have 6gb or Ram and i7 with 8 cores do you mind posting the settings of your material?
