RevitGary
Does anyone know which "Common parameters" should be used when using mental ray? Do they do anything at all? Should they all be unchecked? Does the advanced lighting section apply to mental ray? Thanks!!
Justin Hunt
Yes they do have affect, like "Render hidden objects" will render hidden objects, this caught me out recently. However the advanced lighting is for Radiocity and can be ignored. jhv
RevitGary
Does "displacement" also apply to bump maps and should be left on?
jinsley
bump mapping only affects the way light is reflected off of a material while displacement mapping alters the actual geometry. If you use displacement then you should leave it on... even if you don't, I don't think leaving it checked will alter your render times, or the performance of mental ray. An article on differences between bump, displacement and normal mapping... http://www.cgenie.com/tutorials/article/1-tutorials/5-introduction-to-bump-normal-and-displacement-textures.html -JI
