turning into editable poly adds vertices (do not want)

hey guys, im modyfing 3d objects from a game, and one of the rules to be able to do this is that when you modify an obj file, you cannot add any new vertices and be able to import your edit back into the game.

but i take an obj file with say, 2900 vertices in it, i know this because every 3d editor ive used recognizes this upon import. but when i take this obj file and convert it to editable poly in order to be able to move vertices around n stuff it adds like 4 or 5 vertices all the time (i know this by selecting all the vertices after modifying to editable poly) and i end up with say 2905 vertices, which tereby breaks the rules of the game

is there some way to stop this from happening? i dont recall having this problem before

the game is street fighter 4 if anyones curious :)

if the new vertices are creating new lines (splitting faces) select the line and push 'backspace' on the keyboard...does this remove the vertice too? im not 100% sure...my max is not open...

ctrl+backspace removes edge and associated verts. :)
