White spot when rendered & 2009 max suddenly closed

1. Which renderer are you using? If vray, try disabling refractive caustics in the GI rollout. Also, try checking the invisible option in the vraysun if that's what you're using.

 

2. Welcome to the world of studio max. I have my hand sitting in ctrl+s and press after every couple of actions. Save incrementally as well. You may want to considder moving to a 64-bit workstation as this will significantly lower the frequency of crashes. Unfortunately it won't lower the amount of frustration crashes cause :(
