kino
Hello ! Short version: Which default exporters of max2010 are able to retain shell materials when exported file is imported back to Max2009 ? Longer version: I've got myself into a situation where a complex scene is lightmapped with mr and ready for exporting. Problem is that the exporter plugin (Quest3D exporter) is not available for Max2010 - should have been checked before moving to max2010. Collada format is not an option. So, model needs to be transferred to Max 2009 somehow. Only features that need to get moved are shell materials and uv-channels 1 and 2. Mesh can be collapsed etc. Which format would be best for this purpose ? Any help is greatly appreciated! BR, Jukka
BrianKitts
your best bet would be to convert the shelled materials to a standard material that way you can export as a .3ds or FBX file and maintain your maps. Then you'll be able to import into 2009 to do your quest export. check the following thread for the maxscript that I posted that does exactly what you need. http://forums.cgarchitect.com/39903-maxscript-convert-shelled-material-standard.html#post276573 Edited March 3, 2010 by BrianKitts
Thablanch
FBX contains lots of data, the geometry will look like whatever, but materials, instances and other stuff will follow.... You can also try Bobo's scripts: http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/bff-bobos-file-format
Dave Buchhofer
BFF works well, as long as you remove any instances if plugins or maps that are not in BOTH versions of max. (IE: Color Correction map)

(IE: Color Correction map) Thanks for the tip ! "Official" (old) 0.4.2 of the BFF didn't work, but there is a updated 0.4.3 in http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/bff-2007 that works in Max2010->2009 well!
