potsked
I have a fairly complex animation im finishing up with and in anticipation of downstream compositing, I'm trying to find a simple way to "tag" certain materials/objects with a flat, matte-like color. I need this for several different objects, so it seems like a specific material would be best. My failed approaches: VrayLightMtl: technically works, but sadly casts superfluous light rays into the scene (and poor quality light to boot) VrayMtlWrapper + "Matte surface": this technically works like a charm provided I set a particular background color within 3ds max. However I can only set a single background color, so this would only work for one object at a time. If you have an idea, let me know. I'm assuming this is stupid obvious with a very simple solution
WAcky
Hi Billy (almost the same name as the best tv infommerical personality ever!) For masks i would suggest trying a script like quick passes. You may find something better or more suited at scriptspot.com You could also try using a multimatte element. Depending on how many objects/passes you need you may want to try one of these three scripts floating around designed to generate multimatteelements based on your selection. This will render out a rgb pass which you can using in PS for example and select the appropriate channel to obtain a "perfect" mask. Of course you can do it manually, but there are better and easier options... Good luck!
JonRashid
Couldn't you use a standard material with self illumination on full and tick the exclude from Global lighting box in properties dialog. This would give u a pure colour on the objects you desire without affecting rest of scene.
erickdt
As discussed in another recent thread, VRay wire color enabled in the render elements dialogue would do this for you and is quite easy to set up. E

E I've always wondered how you then make a correct selection with this method? Do you use select by colour in photoshop?
