Gander0
I am currently using a Tyan Tempest i5400XT with two Xeon E5345 Clovertowns. I have a identical spare motherboard that I was thinking about building on and then using my current machine as a render machine. My question is as this motherboard is a couple of years old now how redundant have the chips become that I use on this. Am I better off getting rid of (selling) this motherboard and starting afresh? Motherboard compatible chip list: 5130, 5140, 5148LV, 5150, 5160, E5220*, E5240*, E5260*, X5260*, X5270*, E5335, L5335, E5345, X5355, X5365, E5405^, E5410^, L5410, E5420^, L5420, E5430^, L5430^, E5440^, E5450^, X5450^, X5460^, X5470^ Sorry for this question, it might be simple for someone here but I find it impossible to keep up with chip developments and what is relevant for our industry. Any help is much appreciated.
AJLynn
You can use it but the CPUs for it are Core 2 class Xeons - if you want the latest technology, the i7/Nehalem class CPUs, which are faster at multithreaded rendering (up to about 50% faster) you should get a new board. For an example of a configuration with newer Xeons, go to 3datstech.com and scroll down to the High End configuration.
Gander0
Many thanks Andrew, 50% faster is quite significant!
