I started modeling it this past week and am in the beginning stages of running lighting tests. As far as my lighting setup right now I'm using a tweaked out sun and sky, portal light on my area light coming from the window and that covers my natural lighting (coming through 2 windows). As far as the artificial light I'm using just spotlights in the positions in which they are at in the actual scene (10 in the scene) if you think there is a better way to fake that light please let me know. Here is the main shot and reference I've been modeling off of. I'm still working on some bump maps deciding how I want to go about some of the surface types. All CC is welcome and tips on how you think I should go about moving on in the piece. I too do know that certain small things are placed differently than in the reference. Thanks for looking. BenM08
I know it's been a while since I posted any progress sorry. I think im ready to start texturing, I had to hand in a grey scale render so here it is. I do know some things are a little off in the second two renders as far as the models go i wish I had that reference sooner, I modeled based off of my camera locked on the first shot. The 2nd to renders were eye balled so focal length and such may be off. CC very welcome thanks.

kippu
just needs some reflections and speculars ... looks great
BenM08
Thanks, I should have mentioned I just started adding spec maps today they really need to be tweaked bc as you said. I think once the reflections and glossiness etc is figured out it will sell the piece. Thanks for the feedback
Inxa
Fantastic detailed modeling. With what others have mentioned, I feel that your renders looks to have a little oldish feel to it compared to the photograph. It might be due to less light bouncing or the textures. I know it's super difficult to get all the details in, but this is around 95% already there. Waiting for the updates and final version. Great work. BenM08
Small update. Still cant get my spec maps to show up how I want them, the mia shader is giving me a little more trouble than I hoped for.
Mikeo3D
Ahh a fellow Full Sailor! I graduated CA in October 2008... This scene looks pretty awesome so far, just some more tweaking and It'll be ready to put in your reel. Notice the highlights on the edges of the cabinets, make sure your edges are beveled then maybe put a light right in front of them only casting specular and light link it to them to get a nice highlight on the edges. I'd also make the area around the window a lot brighter maybe put an area light there notice the strong specular on the side of the cabinet and the ceiling. Last maybe some kind of dirt overlay on the bricks to break up the repeating. Put more dirt around the corners and ceiling, etc. Also try and get that highlight on the floor in there. But it definitely looks good so far, what month are you in? I trust the 5am labs are treating you well? Edited June 4, 2010 by Mikeo3D
BenM08
Nice to see a fullsail grad on here, hopefully youre working in the industry now!? Funny I started October 2008, and I am in DRC right now. Im going to be messing with my spec maps these next few days so I can get those highlights you were talking about. I'm not sure why I had so much trouble getting the specs to show up how I have them on my spec maps, it's my first time extensively using the mia shader so I could just be missing something amidst the shader options. Thanks a lot for the crit I will definitely go back in and add some grunge to the brick. Funny thing is I actually have a portal light area light in the window Ill try cranking it up some to get more spill from the window though. Should be updates by mid time next week, I have so much to do for demo reel creation right now!
