Problems With New Vray 1.5

Hello all I’m new here. My son is a member.

I just installed the new version of Vray, update I guess: 1.50. I'm on WinXP 2gigs of ram, 32bit Max 9.

I’m having issues with new version of VRAY.

All my old glass material is rendering black and I can’t use VRay displacement without crashing.

When I open older version max scenes, I get the message telling me that the new version o Vray has updated models for vray light, cams, sun and sky and asks if I want the updates or continue to use settings for older version.

When I choose NO my glass mat is fine. With YES glass renders black. I’m sure it's something simple but I can’t find it.

As far as displacement goes, if it’s turned on max quits. I have to delete vray mod to keep that from happening.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Not sure about the disp problem (maybe a memory issue) but can you post a screencap of the material settings for the glass? Since you say it renders fine with the old lighting models it might also have something to do with your camera settings or sun settings.

Im sure youre in the park . Glass is standard glass material I culled from Evermotion model scene and didnt change any settings. No way to post screen grab. I can email though.

But it happens with standard, vray cam and perspective views (no cam)

I do see however that when the compatibility check box is on for sun/sky/camera models its fine, but then i have to re adjust my lights because they are too bright.

I have to also deselect "use 3dmax photometric scale".

Could this be connecetd to color map settings?

Interesting;

I started a new scene and merged all my models, lights and cameras and no problems with same glass mat. , new vray settings.

Still though I want to find out what the issue was. I like to work these problems to find the answers. Ill try to post some photos.

thanks

You should always Click no, I believ it adjusts your settings so that the materials and settings made in the previous version work in your newer version. If you dont do this it could cause problems and it is with your glass texture.

Well you shouldn't ALWAYS click 'no', it depends on what you're trying to a achieve. If you're trying to have the old scene render the same in 1.5+ as it did in previous versions then click 'no', but there were errors in how the old sun and camera system operated hence the option to 'fix' the old scene. AFAIK, vray doesn't change ANY settings when you click 'yes' (but does use the new sun/camera model), but if you click 'no' it then sets the appropriate checkboxes in the vray globals. From the VRay help...

Legacy sun/sky/camera models - previous versions of V-Ray used slightly different calculation models for the VRaySun, VRaySky and VRayPhysicalCamera which were not entirely physically accurate. When this option is off (the default), V-Ray uses improved and more accurate models. When this is on, V-Ray will switch to the old model (in vray globals) for compatibility with old scenes. When an old scene is opened, V-Ray will automatically display a dialog asking if you want to change this setting.

Use 3ds Max photometric scale - when on (the default), this option aligns the VRayLight, VRaySun, VRaySky and VRayPhysicalCamera to the photometric units used by 3ds Max and its photometric lights. When this is off, these plugins operate in the internal V-Ray photometric space, like in older versions of V-Ray. Keeping this option on ensures that a VRayLight with a given power will match a 3ds Max photometric light with the same power.

The first one is the one that is probably affecting your scene. If you choose 'no' - the first box is checked and the second unchecked; if you choose 'yes' these are reversed.
