ralbot
Hello Everyone, ralbot here. totally new to this realm and very, very naive. currently seeking an M.S. Arch at Univ. of Idaho. hopefully it will get me in the door to the "architectural visualization" field. UI's curriculum doesn't seem as strong in the architecture realm though, more for general world building, product and character modelling, etc. for cgi gaming. Does anyone out there know of a "path" to an Architectural Visualization" degree or credential? Are there schools for this, that maybe I should be going to instead of Univ. of Idaho? Would appreciate any help! ralbot
ihabkal
I would advise anyone wanting to do arch viz not to. It's a very hard way of life. very demanding, no time for yourself and family, clients want it real and want it now. I am sure there are hundreds of ways of making money easier than doing arch viz. and yeah it pays less than being an architect.

mattclinch
LOVE? sound like a teenager. after 30 you forget the meaning of the word. Wow. You sound a little jilted.. I have to say I love my chosen career, an really enjoy being an Architectural Illustrator. To me it is the perfect blend of the technical and the artistic fields. If you correctly manage a client and their expectations of what is realistic in terms of pay/timescales it does not have to be a constant uphill battle. As for a career path, I would not say there is one distinct path. There are courses - certainly in the UK - for this, but I have met people in this industry from all sorts of different backgrounds - product design, architects, 3d, 2d... An Architectural background, and certainly an understanding will help - the ability to read and understand drawings is essential, 3d modelling skills are obviously required, but the artistic side is equally as important too. Working for specialist studios from the ground up certainly teaches you a lot, both in terms of skills and how the industry operates. In the end I think it is largely based on your passion and the quality of your portfolio that secure jobs/clients.
ihabkal
Also it helps if you originate from London rather than Moscow, or Beirut where you are paid 1/10th or less than if you lived in a richer country.

RyanS
so it's a little like being a pilot, lousy wage but fun? You need to be a Hollywood actor if you want a fancy twin-engine turboprop in your hanger.
