Koper
I don't seem to be able to do this:mad: I set it when I save the file output value but it keeps on rendering 32bit I have now even tried to over write it in max script with the exrio function but with no luck. even if I save it by hand it saves as 32bit Have anyone also noticed this and maybe have a solution? pls help
Stephen Thomas
16-bit or half-float EXRs are still 32-bit files. As far as I know it is just the precision that differs i.e. the half-float version has the same unlimited range as the full-float version but uses integers rather than decimal places. I guess the name is something of a misnomer.
Koper
interesting but the file sizes should change right? gonna make another quick test thanx for the reply
Stephen Thomas
The file size should be less as technically it's not having to store as much data.
Crazy Homeless Guy
Koper, Are you rendering through Backburner, or saving local? I had a problem where it would save as 16bit if I saved local, but 32bit if I went through backburner. I solved the problem by changing the default bit value for EXR's on all of the farm machines. http://forums.cgarchitect.com/39019-exr-16bit-compression-through-backburner.html#post270961 Also, in production my 16bit EXR's are typically running 30-40%of the size of 16bit TIFF files. Though I do not currently store extra channels in my EXR's. The file size savings has the potential of being even greater... http://forums.cgarchitect.com/38819-what-best-format-save-render.html#post269619 . Koper
bada bing bada BOOM Thanx Travis, this also solves our problem we had with exr's being different sizes rendered on different computers. Its a huge difference in filesize and in what im rendering, only 1mb bigger than a tga version. I think you should make a new stickey thread on this topic as you had a solid answer cool A
