I7-980x Installed

Recommended Posts

This afternoon I dropped the I-980X on the ASUS RAMPAGE II Extreme. It was interesting just to upload the new BIOS on the motherboard. Not difficult but it takes a little while.

Installing the CPU went without issues. I am not going to run any tests (tired of running benchmarks). The unit seems a little bit faster, specially of rendering. Bases on no scientific test's....... The gains are not really that great. After running the speed index from Microsoft, the unit shows some modest gain of about 5%.

The one thing I can feel is that the computer feels very stable, it is a nice feeling to see no flickering and other small anoying stability issues.

Elliot

I ran AutoCAD 2010 MEP for my mechanical work. I have a complex 3D model. On this chip the model runs faster. The rendering inside Autocad MEP went very fast as compared to the same image with the chip. This is very interesting gain....... Since most of what I do is nechanical..... this is a great gain.

I will look for that benchmark you are recommending.

I wrote the last report almost inmediately after I installed the chip. Now after 40 minutes of playing with different softwares, there is a definite gain in speed.

I will google for the benchmark your are recommending in the next few minutes.

Thanks

I spent a few hour this morning working on a very modest overclocking procedure. The machine is reading 10.38 on Cinebench while achieving a temp no higher than 56 degrees C at 100% CPU Utilization. Is this too aggressive. The CPU-Z is showing 4.54Mhz for speed.

In reference to the single CPU speed measurement I don't know what do you mean. Is this a test that Cinebench offers. I did the defaualt test Cinebench has.

Over the years I felt I couldn't trust most of this benchmarks. The one thing I trus is my feeling about the machine. The unit is definitely fast. It renders extremely quick. For the first time in many years I feel that the money was well spent.

Interesting. That chip has a default multiplier of 25 but it's an X series so it's unlocked, right? And you set it to 29 in the BIOS? I guess some programs think that it's 3.5GHz because they're calculating it based on 25x140=3500 but CPUZ knows it's actually 29 and gets it right.

Interesting explanation you made...... Even the super good person at ASUS could not explain what you described. We tried a multiplier of 30 and it did work but then we throttled it back to 29. He suggested that we are carefull unless I have better cooling.

One of the reps told me that they have played the 980x to 4.5mhz and it was stable. All I know is that my modest machine is fast..... This is one of the most fast machines I have ever assembled.

Thanks

Elliot

I love it that with Asus you can get somebody at tech support to explain how to overclock your machine. BTW, what you were saying earlier about CPU temp - that CPU is spec'ed to go up to 67C, but being in the 50-range is better, to be very safe.

I placed a Third Party Raid controller card for the Seagate Barracudas XT, 2T @ 6Gb/s with 64mb of buffer. I found a utility that one of the ASUS guys suggested to measure the transfer speed for these drives and the third party controller. I am attaching two photos. One with the normal drive as storage and the other one with the Raid. Interesting results.

You are right on about ASUS. These tech support guys in the US office at Jefferson IN / Louisville, KY and the LA, California people as well are just fantastic. They don't give their last name but they are Bryan (Supervisor), Brent, Sony, David, Nick. The overclocker advisor, Mason, he was just incredibly good.

My next board will definitely be an ASUS. In the past I have had MSI, Supermicro, Tyan and they too have good tech's but the guys at ASUS over the last two days were just right on the nail and with a fantastic atittude to be helpfull.

Thanks

Elliot
