Dave Buckley
bit of help needed here guys, i'm looking to trouble shoot my leaf material, i've followed the settings described here http://3dsmaxrendering.blogspot.com/2008/06/translucent-leaves.html but as you can see in the rendered output, the result is throwing back some weird effects depending on which side of the leaf you look at. i know jinsley was looking at the this tut when doing grass and i'm just wondering if any others have taken a look at it and could advise where it needs tweaking in order to get the leaves working a little better. textures taken from peter guthries tutorial on leaves to try and see if i could replicate his vray render. i'm not really too sure which settings to change/adjust/skip
CJI
Ive done loads of these as i have been building a small tree library. I was also trying to replicate peters leaves. Give me a sec and i will post an example and a shot of my texture settings.

CJI
Ok the key is the interaction between the the transparency and Translucency settings. -My basic set up is a leaf map in the Diffuse Colour -Grey scale leaf specular map - Transparency at 1 with a two sided shader in the transparency map set to front=black, back= another grey scale leaf map (this map is what controls the translucency level) - Translucency weight set to 1 with the colour picked from the original leaf colour map and then lightened slightly. (Translucency should always be 1 as if its less it will make the leaf transparent instead, control translucency using the gray scale map in the two sided material) You could also add a bump if you want, go nuts haha. Hope that helps dave. Would be good to see how you get on, maybe make my material better
Dave Buckley
i'm such a d!ck. i had my cutout map instanced into the back of the two-sided base rather than the reflection map, makes sense i guess. i'll post the results when it renders
CJI
Hey...when i was first doing it i had maps in the translucency channels and everything trying to get it to work. then the penny dropped and i felt rather dumb!

I remember running into this a few times also... you have to make sure that you have a two-sided base in the transparency slot with front value being black and back being white with diffuse map instanced into the back... IOR set at 1.0 then you just need to set your translucency value to something you think is appropriate. you can add bump and opacity after that...
