PiXeL_MoNKeY
Devin, that doesn't make any sense. OpenGL shouldn't be faster than DirectX, except in special cases. All viewport performance efforts over the past releases has been done with DirectX. What are you doing? What are you working with? What viewport shading method are you using? With the slowdown are you also seeing white flashes? If you are then it could be related to the Vista/Win7 feature talked about on the AREA here. -Eric
Devin Johnston
Eric I was getting white flashes so I did what that guy recommended and the flashes have stopped. I've gone back through all the video drivers including Direct 3D 9&10 as well as the Nvidia performance driver and none of them work as well as the Open GL. Please don't mistake my statement "working as well as the Open GL" to mean it's working great, there's still a lot of lag and I'm really wondering if I shoulden't reformat my machine and go back to XP64 and Max 2009. PiXeL_MoNKeY
I would stick with DX9 and when installing card drivers you should really get a driver cleaner to remove all files before an install. This could possibly solve some of your issues. -Eric
Devin Johnston
I've already gone back to XP64, I don't know what's going on with W7 but it sucks as far a video performance and memory usage goes. It may be that my particular card has some issues that haven't been addressed by Nvidia yet but the fact that it uses a gig more ram than XP64 does and doesn't deliver any better performance makes me very wary. Max 2011 works fine on XP64 so I'm sticking with it for now.
manju_chhabra
Hi all, Read your conversation, I even believe that though autodesk has introduced many features in 3D max 2011 including the constant errors like fatal error in mental ray rendering and there is one error which i am constantly facing is memory low the moment i apply a bitmap material. It is constanly stopping me to continue working. If anybody could please help... thanx
Dave Buckley
anybody elses 'delete' key stop working after they have used slate? actually, create a material using slate, then apply it to an object in the scene by dragging from the node to the object then try and delete the object using the delete key. if i then go back to compact mode and apply the same material from there, my delete key works again. weird little bug Edited May 17, 2010 by Dave Buckley sorry perhaps i should expand a bit more
PiXeL_MoNKeY
Do you have Keyboard Toggle Override enabled? Is Slate closed when you try this? From the 3ds_Max_readme.htm:When you minimize the Slate Material Editor, the dialog will keep focus. This gives the impression that the 3ds Max keyboard shortcuts are not functioning. It is recommended that you close the Slate Material Editor when you are not using it.-Eric
Dave Buckley
No neither, slate is closed. It's not while I've got slate open either only if I apply a material and then close it
Dave Buckley
new one this morning, just opened max and drew a few boxes and my result is attached. not sure why i'm getting all of these extra edges
Dave Buckley
oh and i've only just noticed but when i select the geometry, the edges go black instead of white? and i no longer have a viewcube or a steering wheel, and when i try to go to these in the menus i don't have anything in the sub menus
Dave Buckley
the only thing i can think of that i have done differently this morning is try and run the old autoedges scripts on something that came through horribly. now it appears (not saying this is the case though) to be having the opposite effect on all of my geometry

I had this bug annoying the hell out of me. Never figured out the cause and only resolve I could find was restarting max... Now, this is still far from being a cure, but loads better then restarting 10 times a day. Oh, btw... Del key doesnt stop working altogether... It just gets wired to the Autokey function. You can see the key symbol flashing when hitting del key or using Delete from the Edit menu. Regarding your DX10 bug, luckily I dont get those borked edges. I do get the black wireframe, when in shaded view, but I like it. Looks great with the dark ui theme
