Cynthia Hansen
Hi all, I've offered my 3d rendering services pro bono to a group that is rebuilding an orphanage in Haiti. The problem is that they use Rhino. I'm not familiar with it and they aren't sure what would be the best file format to give me. From what little I can find online to convert a Rhino file for 3ds Max, it looks like there is the NPower converter is the best way to go. Unfortunately, I can't afford to get it at this time as I'm out of work and money is tight. Are there other suggestions that you could give me that would work best for me to get the file? I'd really like to help them out with this. Thanks, Cynthia
Fran
Hi Cynthia, First off - good for you! I would just ask them to output to 3ds format with medium mesh density. Box-like things (like walls) will still be minimal polys and curved things will be nice. You could ask them to name their objects with meaningful names to help you sort them in Max. In my experience, OBJ format from Rhino has not imported very well at all in Max. Though Max OBJ is great in Rhino. Go figure.
Cynthia Hansen
Thanks Fran, I was hoping you might have an idea as to what to do for the conversion! Cynthia
Fernando Lino
You can download the trial version of Rhino to do it yourself....if you have Autodesk Max Subcription there is an extension to import Rhino via SAT format. "Connection Extension for 3ds Max Design 2010 Enhanced interoperability with CAD packages – Bring solid models from many of your favorite CAD packages into 3ds Max Design 2010 for visual enhancement or conceptual design and export them back as solids when you’re done. A new high-fidelity SAT data translator helps make it easier to move solids-based data between 3ds Max Design and Autodesk® Revit® Architecture, Autodesk® Inventor® Professional, or certain third-party CAD products without translating to polygons." there is a Max version as well so far i remember. mcfetrmatt
Have a look into Powernurbs. They have connection extensions that allow you to open the .3dm file in 3ds Max. Very useful!
