modeling help - sharp edges and smooth sirface

hello all.

sorry to bother but i am trying to figure this one out.

i am currently modeling something for school and i started with a basic box. i converted it to editable poly. and i moved the vertex were i wanted to, but now that i have the basic shape am running into some problem.

the object looks too shopy (it has hard edges were i wanted smooth.).

can some one pleas tell me how can i make my object smooth but keeping the edges.

this is just an example, this is not my real model its just an example of my problem.

 

any comment or any tips i will appreciated and it will help me finish my final project.
