kris McIsaac
I am having trouble with linking a dwg to Max. Some of my elements (mainly Mullions and railings) are flying all over the place. I have had this happen before but not to this extent. Just wondering if anyone has had this problem and if it can be fixed. I thought it may have been an origin/coordinates thing. I think it's 170m above sea level. I also tried FBX which did not have this problem but I dont like working with it.
tcupp
I was actually going to recommend FBX. I have also had rather random results with DWG's. Just curious, what are your problmes with FBX...I have not yet ran into any.
kris McIsaac
I managed to fix the problem. I linked the Revit file into a new one then exported to DWG and it was all ok The main reason I dont like FBX is I need the link function. I also like the way DWG combines by material. It suits my workflow. The first thing I do when I import the model is apply a flat white material to everything. FBX creates multi sub mats for many objects and once the white mat is applied you can't tell what is a single mat object and what is a multi. I also prefer A&D materials. DWG imports look better in the viewport. Ill play more when 2011 gets here and see if the new link function helps. I think if I was the only one creating the Revit model and if all the families were set up correctly it would work better but for now I will stick to DWG
hockley91
I also have issues with .FBX. But, it's definitely going to be the way to import soon. Right now though, .dwg's come in cleaner and I always remap my textures in 3DS Max. If you use .fbx remember to use the "auto edge" function to clean up the trangulation. Someone came up with a script to do it automatically, but I forget right now where it is. Perhaps Scriptspot? Just search the forums to find it. Oh...and I'm also a Vray user. I need to learn Mental Ray, but I'm so used to Vray.
hockley91
Well, I have been using 3DS MAX 2011 trial with the REVIT 2011 trial and....WOW! They have made some incredible changes and the REVIT to 3DS Max issues are really solved I think. Using the .fbx file link manager has solved a lot of the importing issues and there are many options. They've consolidated the Material Library so there is cross compatability with Revit materials also. So, make sure the textures look right before you export. The Revit texture settings have also been modified and it's much easier to apply and see what your textures look like in the REVIT environment. Really good things with 2011!
