Upgrade an allready new machine

Recommended Posts

Hello:

I´ve recently built a new machine with the following essential parts:

Mobo: Asus P6T deluxe V2

Proc: i7 920

Ram: 6GB pc3 12800

VCard: Gigabyte GTX 275 SuperOverclocked (1792 Mb)

Now i may have the chance to change the graphic card at no cost for a GTX 470, the current GC i have is not as good as i thought it would be,(max 20009) especially in wireframe diplay, so my doubt here is if it would be a better choice to have the 470 instead.

I have looked for some reviews and benchmarks but couldn´t find a direct comparison betwwen the two, the nearest i could finde was this betwwen the 275 OC and a 480 (spanish):

http://www.noticias3d.com/articulo.asp?idarticulo=1245&pag=1

Any have tested the 470 in max, how does it work?

i may also upgrade to a i7 930 in the process, so here my doubt is about the licenses of the software, windows 7, max, etc. especially w7, will i have problems with the licensing if i change both the processor and the GC? i can export the max license, but my windows is an OEM version and i have doubts about it.

Thank you in avdance.

PS:

I forgot the option of the radeon 5870, this could be also an option for me.

As you have noticed there doesn't seem to be as much info on the 470 but you can bet it still runs hot and needs alot of juice so is your power and cooling up to it. For single cards they are a powerful but to be honest few people have actually tested them very much in real world scenarios. You can probably put your money on it that it is better than 275 OC though whether it could outperform the radeon is another issue entirely. I don't think so but thats up to you and your loyalties/money/bang for buck etc.

I don't see the benefit of upgrading to the 930 if its going to cost you the extra money as the 920 can overclock to 3.2Ghz (i7 960) levels safely on the stock cooling. (Its a great chip) and often can come with the option in the bios as a standard preset without voiding warranty ( good for non overclockers who want a quick fix) . Check this though, don't take my word for it.

Are licences linked to your Processor and card? I don't think they are? If you are just swapping those components out and keeping your HDDs then i don't think that is an issue, but i could be wrong.

Thank´s for the rep Uddie.

after my post i continued to futher investigate in the web and i came to the conclusion that the GFX 4xx are too hot and power needed.

I am leading more and more to the ATI side right now.

The thing here is that i have the option to change the card for free, (always talking in this price range) an since i´m not very happy with my actual card i was looking for options.

The ATI 5870 seems to be my better choice right now.

So after all my question would be a nothing original and ever present:

wich is better for 3dmax viewport performance, Nvidia GTX 275 superoverclocked or ATI radeon 5870 ???

i have looked to charts and comparisons, but for me the numbers in the game benchmarks are not very helpfull, i would apreciate some 3d max user experience on this particular card.

Also, is there some better performance in newer max versions, i´m runing 2009, maybe advantages from direct 11 wich can be suported by this card?

Thank you again.

If you can get the 470 at no charge, then do it for sure.

As for the 930 upgrade, I would not do it. it is basically a 920 with a different timing.

As for comparing a GTX275 to a 5870, that's not really a fair comparison. The 5870 would be a better gfx card over the 275, but I would get the 470GTX.

How are you getting these upgrades for no cost?

As Chris said, the 920 to 930 upgrade is very minor. And AFAIK there is no serious testing to compare the 285 to the 470 in Max. In the game benchmarks, the 470 does beat the 285 (but not by a heck of a lot) and the Radeon 5870 beats both of those - but right now I've got nothing to correlate those results to Max...
