Wrought iron stair case?

Anyone have any tips on doing a curved wrought iron stair case. Very decorative.

I guess I could build the design in photoshop then use a bitmap cutout. But that would not give it any depth. Would be like a paper black cut out. What would be the best way to do this? see attached image for an example.

Thanks!!

I had thought about doing something like this recently too. Just now I tried the Path deform as mentioned, but this is pretty difficult to get right. With some perseverance it could work tho. Another idea - If your using Vray perhaps you could use UVUnwrap/splinemap to map the pattern on to an extruded curve and then use displacement with the waterlevel option to cutout the shape.

Good luck!

Not a recipe, but some thoughts.

There's a sense of which way is up. If you just modeled it on a rectangle and used spline following (my first idea) the final result would probably look rotated. I think it best to be modeled on the slope then bent to shape. Harder to set up.

Use splines, renderable, rectangular.

Path deform is looking very finicky to get right.

Okay, I'm having what looks like success this way...

Create a rectangular spline with appropriate infill decoration. Not renderable.

Bend it to shape in plan with bend or what have you.

Skew it to vertical in elevation.

Renderable spline modifier.

if you have the pattern as a bitmap already, you could either trace it manually with splines or try to convert it to a vector image in illustrator and see, if it could be converted to dwg or something... just a random thought.

Oh yeah, on the base spline, rather than control out of plane curvature with handles, just select the long segments and divide them (there's a button for that) into a number of shorter segments. This will keep it planar through the bend. Oh yeah, turn off optimize.
