vozdra
hey, new poster here. I'm desperate to know as to how to make this sort of mesh. It scales from smaller openings to larger ones.... im interested in particular in replecating the effects of the mesh seen in the first three pictures. I hope you can help!! Thanks guys
Ricardo Eloy
How about simply using an opacity map? If you're using VRay, you could even use the same map for displacement in order to get the volume.
vozdra
im not really sure what you mean as i have never used opacity maps. Could you give an example perhaps or better explain?
DanGrover
Opacity maps are just like any other map - you can map them in a certain preset way (applied like a plane, a box etc) or specifically unwrap the model so that you can "paint" map onto it. An opacity maps works by defining the opacity of the mesh below it - black = totally invisible, white = totally opaque, with any shade of grey being respectively half-clear-half-opaque. Note, that this does not do any refraction or anything, it's purely altering the opacity of the object.
abmitalia
What Ricardo than means with the same map for displacment ( may be a little more blured ) is to creat optical thickness to the borders. RK
tecton3d
sure that could be done with an opacity map but to me, it looks more like a form (and surface) easily derived from script-based computing like rhino + grasshopper, maxscript, and/or maya. if you're interested in the surface architecturally, look into parametric modeling in architecture. If you only want to re-create it for an image, research opacity maps and make the map in photoshop, and put it to your surface.
