akinlolugboji
A Core Due shows two cores via task manager under the performance tab.A Core Quad should show four.A Core 2 Duo should show four while a core 2 quad should eight am I correct?
sygboe
i think 'core 2' duo is just a newer type. so duo is still 2 cores and quad is still only 2 cores, just newer and quicker. (non technical answer)
david.s
how many cores? The original dual core was just called CORE DUO (lets forget the original dual core pentium !). Then an updated version came out which they decided to call....CORE 2DUO. The CORE 2 DUO QUAD, is a chip containing 2x CORE 2 DUOs, so results in a cpu with 4 physical cores. Hope that helps. AJLynn
All the chips with Duo in their names have 2 cores. All the ones with Quad have 4 cores. These are "real" cores - no hyperthreading - so that's the number you see. The Core i7 and i5 chips vary. i7's can have 2, 4 or 6 cores (you have to look up the model number) but they have hyperthreading so in task manager you see twice the number there actually are. i5's can have 2 or 4. Some have hyperthreading and some don't. Confusing enough for you?

akinlolugboji
From the name how do we know know how many core there are, as am looking for an eight core system.
Slinger
The easiest way is to go to intel's site and look up specific processors. The whole coreduo name was simply that, a name. it doesn't truly represent a cpu's core count so to speak.
AJLynn
BTW there are no 8-core chips, so for an 8-core system you're looking at two 4-core Xeons. These would ideally be "Nehalem" type Xeons of the 5500 or 5600 type. The March and May workstation pages at 3datstech.com include some dual Xeon options. A solid 6-core box would be a possibility if the dual Xeon is cost prohibitive - the May page includes three 6-core options.
Guest zarfworld
I checked out Intel website and it says all i7 have 4 cores. Check this link - http://www.intel.com/products/processor/corei7/specifications.htm
AJLynn
That information is outdated. There's a 6-core i7, the 980X, and the i7-6xx series are 2-core.
Guest zarfworld
How do you know that? Where can you find that info?
AJLynn
Intel literature. Wikipedia. Tomshardware.com. It's all out there.
