Crazy Homeless Guy
Hmmm... Worth reading to make sure you are not paying to much for your TV. The article outlines with a chart the viewing distance to the most out of the resolution on the screen. According to this I will gain no significant advantage by going to 1080p, instead of paying less for a 720p. Good to know. I can spend that money elsewhere. http://carltonbale.com/1080p-does-matter
Ricardo Eloy
Nice article. I have never noticed much difference between 720p and 1080p, anyway...
Jeff Mottle
A lot has to do with the quality of your display. About 18 months ago I purchased a 60" Pioneer Elite for about $6K (arguably the best Plasma on the market at the time) and the difference between 720p and 1080p is like night and day. My viewing distance is about 15 feet.
Crazy Homeless Guy
A lot has to do with the quality of your display. My viewing distance is about 15 feet. I have read about the Pioneer displays. It is my understanding that Pioneer was using Panasonic for help with production of the plasmas. This means that Panasonic was using the same technology or similar technology in its own screens. Pioneer's plasmas were superior to Panasonic's, but Pioneer no longer makes plasmas, and Panasonic does. From what I understanding, the Panasonic displays are now considered the best on the market. ......at least this is how I interpreted what the user forums were saying. Jeff Mottle
Yeah when I purchased my new receiver about 6 months ago the guy at the hi-fi shop told me that Pioneer stopped making their displays. I was surprised. Both the US and Canadian websites still feature them. The shop I was at only carries high end stuff, speakers for 20K+ and that sort of thing and he told me that the Elites were still one of the best panels ever made, but they did not sell them. I've not done much reading since, so it's very possible that the Panosonics are better now. With the manufacturer warranty and the 1 year extended with my credit card I got a 6 year manufacturer warranty, so I think I'll have this display for a while. Don't know what would happen if it died though if they are indeed not making it anymore. My guess is the price made it a hard sell for all but the most hardcore audio/videofiles. When it comes to displays, I am uber picky though. If the color is even slightly off or the blacks are not ink black, I can't even concentrate on the movie. AJLynn
I had a salesman try to talk me into the Pioneer Elite when I was TV shopping but the price was too much for me when the Sony SXRD sets had just been discontinued and were being sold at closeout pricing, and the image quality was almost as good. I can tell 480P from 720P from 1080P. 480P is jaggy, 720P is very good and at 1080P I can't see pixels from my couch.
