How to model this in 3ds max

1st by drawing a cross-section, and a spline.

then using the "loft" command to get it along the path.

you can influence the bending of the cross-section using the bezier curves.

2nd another way would be to create cross-sections at different parts of the object, then bridging them together in edit poly modifier.

3rd by drawing cross-sections with splines, and then using "crossection" and "surface" modifiers.

google any of these up, and you'll find loads of examples. there are in the 3d max help.

I'm not a Max user, but this question, as well as many similar ones here, really makes me wonder. Is Max really that convoluted that a tutorial is needed for making such simple shapes? Or is it that there are so many ways to do it that it may be difficult to choose?

BTW, making such a Moebius strip/ring was one of the very first commercial 3D jobs I had, back in the early 90s, for a CD multimedia encyclopedia. It was a piece of cake to model and animate/bend from a flat strip to Moebius ring using trueSpace 15+ years ago.

I would think that 3D software should have gone a long way since then?

It certainly would be very easy to make in Lightwave nowadays. Or in SketchUp for that matter...

Hi, here's a suggestion for a method. Create a long box with several width segments. Apply an FDD box with 2X2 points. Grab the points at one end and twist 90 degrees to get the smooth side curve. Apply a bend modifier and move the center of the modifier all the way over to one end of the box. Duplicate the box and position it so that the two join up to get the full 180 degree twist. Now you just need another two boxes with only the bend, and weld them together. Enclosed a couple of renders of how that looks.

When lofting or sweeping the cross section along the path the geometry doesn't join smoothly (not tangent) where the spline was closed (ie vertex numer 1). Anyone know how to get around that?

ps it is a closed spline and a bezier join
