ok here is an idle curiousity question

What did you start with and what are you using right now? hardware and/or software?

who ever has the oldest machine presently still in use at the Office (should win some kind of raffle and get a newer computer)

just to get the ball rolling (hopefull not downhill)

i started autocad in '88 using an XT for Autosketch and then graduated to a 286 16 mb ram for autocad 2.54 (i Think, the release b4 R9 came out)

bought Autoshade 2.0 in '90

1st computer that i used at work was a 286 20 mhz (i learned to drink coffee because of this machine)

1st computer i ever bought was a 386 25 mhz 16 mg ram 104 mb conner harddrive THE 1st 25 COLOR video card STB (something) paid (including interest) $8,1000. ouch

presently got a dual PIII 800 mhz w/ 2 gb ram 22" La Cie monitor (the monitor is worth more than the entire computer nowadays)

so what do you have? what did you start with?

just wondering

Thanks

Randy

I've been using Datacad for 3D since 1987. Started on a screaming 16Mhz 8086-class with VGA!!! graphics--640x480, baby! Soon had to invest large change into a graphics accelerator, a VMI Cobra. It was actually very fast even by today's standards at 2D vector display. First sold CG renderings were made with Renderize in the middle 90's, don't recall exactly when.

Didn't we do this thread before?

Now its a Boxx 2700+ model with a 2600+ and a 2400+ as overflow machines. Currently model/render with Datacad/Lightscape, while trying to get comfortable in FormZ, Rhino and Cinema4D. I tend to spend a lot of money on software I don't use.

...that obvious huh?

chris yessios(sp?), who developed formz used to teach there. i think he is still an adjunct proffessor. the story goes that he started the development on formZ while at OSU, before he turned it into a company.

for those who don't know, OSU in this case = Ohio St.

In the early 80's I started to use computers..

I started to learn programming on a ZX81 it had 16Kbyte memory on it, and a good old 2 color display.

in the late 80's I got my first MSX. Also used it for programming and my first steps into "3D" just with some simple BASIC programs. Also wrote my first game called: Ecstacy (hmmmm) I came across that same game when I downloaded a MSX emulator for PC. downloaded it from some ftp server somewhere.. kinda funny...

After that I switched to PC's and started to use autocad 9 to 2000, my first 3d project was done in '95 on acad13..

And now I'm preparing my scenes in acad, model in MAX, and render with whatever suits best... I'v evaluated brazil lately, and I was very impressed of the speed versus quality..

around 89s.. I started with Commodore 64. i was learning Math & english with that but it was only when my mom was at home other than play games :D .

No monitor . TV as big as possible.

After that we upgrade to Amiga 512 and bought a Sony 14" TV just for this computer. There was a 2D cad software to draw architectural staff but like to play games more. I found a pc emulator and run my fathers engeneering softwarwe for calculations.

93s upgraded to 386 DX 40 + 105 mb hdd + 8 mb ram

Fell inlove with 3ds 56 Chevy Convertible model, My dream was to model cars like that. Also learned AutoCAD 10 by myself.

Nowadays, Modeling with AutoCAD, rendering with 3ds MAX

Learning vray.

Computer p4 2.4, 512 ram , 80gb hdd, ti4200 video card.

started using modelshop on Mac LC in 1990

changed to Microstation on PC in 1993. Imagine buying a commercial copy of Microstation while still studying (although I got a good discount).

Started rendering on Lightwave in 1997 and finally migrating everything to Lightwave.

Nowadays I have 3 seats of Lightwave running on XPs and W2000 and a bunch of render machines.

Currently studying whether I should upgrade to XSI
