keithg
when i export archicad files into maya, i save them out as 3ds. but when i get them into maya, the geometry is a bunch of garbage, no paraneterization, nothing makes sense, and it wreaks havok trying to texture. so, i guess my question is, am i trying to export out as the right format? basically, when in shaded mode, everything looks ok, but wireframe shows the cunfusion, and i am not quite sure i am able to export large files from archicad as dxf, or dwg
stefkeB
Try to export as an OBJ-file from ArchiCAD. Maya might like it better. I've exported ArchiCAD models as 3ds-files into any other program I had lying around and it usually works fine, but OBJ-export from ArchiCAD is usable. edit: I don't use Maya, so can't help you with that part

shaneis
If Archicad can export FBX, then that's a good bet (sorry, I don't use it so don't know). In Maya 8.5 menu, Window>Settings/Preferences>Plug-in Manager. Look for "fbxmaya.mll" Load/ auto-load it. Now you can import the FBX formats into Maya. Again in Maya's menus, now go File>Import (options box). Under "General Options", you can choose FBX, DXF_FBX or DAE_FBX...among many others. If you can't export from Archicad in a suitable format, get the FBX tool from the Autodesk website (it's free) and prep the file for Maya import there.
