alchemy
I am looking at creating architecture models using rapid prototyping. I am in the process of doing some research to see if enough architects are designing in a 3D program that can output STL files? I am also interested in learning how often an architect chooses to create a physical model? Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. tcorbett
Well, right now the price point for a RP machine is still pretty high for most architectural firms. I know that Morphosis uses one of these, and I imagine someone like KPF, HOK, or SOM might have one. The big industry for this is still automobile / parts manufacturing. (I am told that Brose autoparts has 3D printers in the coffee break rooms - print a model, discuss it over a cup of coffee) As for creating an STL file, most 3D programs can generating this. VIZ has an export option, and I believe FormZ includes one as well. Not sure about Maya, but I would imagine they do.
John Dollus
Problem isn't just with the file format. Most people do not know how to create files for RP output. For instance, if a bldg. model is to be printed at a small scale, the details will have to be enlarged to account for build size and durability of the material used. Can 'o worms....
