I have just been contracted to model a yacht in 3d for a web site and guess what, I have never modelled a yacht before. in fact I have never modelled in Viz before. i use viz to render. I am an archicad user and there is no-way archicad can model such an organic shape.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

many thanks,

Rachel,

A method I have used for max 6 is outlined in the column link below. It uses Box modeling techniques and requires the hull plans for the ship/boat you want to build to be loaded as background images.

The example here is a very simple dory to show the process, but in my new book 3ds max 6 Fundamentals by New Riders Publishing I show in detail how to model a larger ship.

If you are using max 4 you will need to get the free plug-in called Meshtools for similar tools.

Rachel,

I'm sure Ted's is better..

Using the info you can get from the yacht people, I assumuing. Using archicad create 1/2 hull sections keel to gunnal -sic- bow to stern. Draw individual polylines that define what would be typically the >rib members

Import drawing into viz, so the polyline profiles are editable splines. Most likely the default for poly type lines from archicad. Use the terrian tool with one or all profiles selected, Creation panel, Objects>Compound Objects>Terrian. This will create 1/2 of the hull mesh. You can mirror and make adjustments as needed-Mesh smooth ect. It maybe easier to bring the hull half back into archicad and finish the model.

Actually did a ship hull using this method 2 years ago. Got good results using terrian mesh smooth. Was not the cleanest model but it looked good, judge for yourself.

Radiosity in LS, Rendered in viz, not the final image either-one that did not get archived to disk.
