Muzzy those materials are also looking pretty handy....downloaded them and placed them in my max matlibs file but having trouble getting anything up in the material editor though.....just has lots of spaces saying (missing material)you sure these will work with vray free?

The material you see is a standard material with a ver low noise bump map which is stretched and rotated, and on the reflection map there is that vraymap with glossy reflections. In this little scene I use 2 omni's and an HDRI image for lighting that thing..

Thanks for your help Michiel! I'm modelling a design for a cheese grater and s=don't want the surface to be totally chrome-like so need a few scratches, so your technique is coming in handy...is gonna take a fair bit of tweaking though....

Cheers!

this is my 2 cents, not perfect but customizable :

it's a Vray material, here are the settings :

Of course, it's faster then using a Vray Map to simulate the glossy and it gives better results on flat surfaces but it fakes a bit dipending on the camera point of vue.

hope it can help.

Thanks Dan? Dunno if thats your name?

Same old problem again im afraid in that Vray free doesn't have vray materials, only a vray map for reflections and refractions. All these guidelines should come in handy for others though!

Thanks
