Gander0
Hi all! Can anyone give me some tips on how to create a good stainless steel material with Max and Vray Free? Thanks Gander
Tim Nelson
Here try this. Worked good for me, but slows down your render a bit. I think the reflectance color is set at 220.
xgarcia
I don't think VRay Free comes with VRay mats Timmatron.
Gander0
Thanks Timmatron but Xavier is right i've only got a vray map to work with.

muzzy
There are some free materials for vray at evermotion.org May be that can solve your problem.
Gander0
That looks good quizzy ....like the brushed effect need a bit of that in what im making....care to divulge any more? Muzzy those materials are also looking pretty handy....downloaded them and placed them in my max matlibs file but having trouble getting anything up in the material editor though.....just has lots of spaces saying (missing material)you sure these will work with vray free? cheers Gander
Arnel
Those are vray mats which are only available for vray advance and not for vray free.
Gander0
Right im guessing that it might be time to revert back to max's scanline renerer and a raytrace material?
quizzy
The material you see is a standard material with a ver low noise bump map which is stretched and rotated, and on the reflection map there is that vraymap with glossy reflections. In this little scene I use 2 omni's and an HDRI image for lighting that thing..
Gander0
Thanks for your help Michiel! I'm modelling a design for a cheese grater and s=don't want the surface to be totally chrome-like so need a few scratches, so your technique is coming in handy...is gonna take a fair bit of tweaking though.... Cheers! Gander
quizzy
Glad I could help you out there... well I also guess you saw the tutorial on brushed stainless steel today in the news on cgarchitect.com, thats also a good one..
DapperDanJelly
this is my 2 cents, not perfect but customizable : it's a Vray material, here are the settings : http://membres.lycos.fr/morthshuman/settings.gif Of course, it's faster then using a Vray Map to simulate the glossy and it gives better results on flat surfaces but it fakes a bit dipending on the camera point of vue. hope it can help. Gander0
Thanks Dan? Dunno if thats your name? Same old problem again im afraid in that Vray free doesn't have vray materials, only a vray map for reflections and refractions. All these guidelines should come in handy for others though!
