P.R.S. Sivakumar .
Hello everybody I am a new user to viz. Just took some serious classes. Before going into learning the materials and rendering, I would like to know if I should straight away start learning VRay renderer instead of Viz's. I don't intend to buy any renderers now. How good is the freely downloadable VRay Free 1.09.03m which has only basic features? Can one do any serious work using this? Or will I be better off learning Viz's own native renderer? (So far I have been modelling and rendering with plain AutoCAD). Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. PRSS
Ricardo Eloy
Hi! IMHO, you should first learn your software, and only after you feel like you have mastered it you should jump to a different renderer like VRay. I see many newbies dreaming of finalRender, Brazil r/s and VRay without even knowing what to do with the core software (max). Using a plugin will not automatically give you better results. Check out some of Uirso's or Victor Erthal's works here in the forum. No plugins used and yet some of the best quality images. [] Rick
Bhanu
Hi PRSS Earlier posts I saw your AutoCAD renderings. Pretty well done. VIZ / MAX / Cinema 4D and other 3d softwares would definitely enhance your renderings much better. I agree with what Rick was telling...it is essential to get expertise on core software and go on for plug ins like vray or final render or brazil. Good luck..try the stuff.. STRAT
like what those 2 said to the letter.... before using any external renderers, learn your own core renderer fluently. learn viz's scan line renderer inside out. learn basic 3 point lighting techniques. learn how to fake radiosity and gi. etc etc. learn it inside out! this will insure you have a secure knowledge of how to render and you wont end up letting the new renderer do all the work for you, making it look standard and boring. P.R.S. Sivakumar .
Hello everybody Thanks a lot for the tips. Thanks Bhanu for the encouraging words. I shall continue classes in Viz rendering. But still, can someone tell me if this free VRay useful? - just an academic interest for the time being. quizzy
Everything is useful if you're beginning... Get a taste of everything and then decide on which flavour you like best... But!!! First things first.. Learn the basics!!! Try this: create a red sphere (ambient color should be black or dark grey) create a blue light (omni) by blue i mean blue not blue-ish hit the render button... Before you hit the render button, guess what the render will look like nad why??

PRSS I know I speak highly about Vray all the time... but the Vray free offers a lot... espcially considering the fact that it is free. If you want to do super fast reflections or refractions or raytraced shadows (compared to standard max)... vetay free is great and very useful... Plus you have access to a limited version of the GI... and for 90% or straight forward GI renders... what you have access to is great.
