Ernest Burden III
Can you use the DEM files in either AutoCAD or VIZ? I doubt it. DEM - digital elevation model - can be read by most landscape programs, and there are some free viewers on the web that can be found through the USGS, though they are usually not very slick (you get what you pay for). It it interesting to see how they combine the DEM data with vector mapping data and display it together properly keyed to the earth. The whole GIS process is cumbersome but a lot of work has been done to make it work predictably. If what you want to do is generate a terrain from a DEM file, that cam be done in a variety of software. Corel has priced Bryce5 and about $80 I think, and it will do a very good job of it. It is the only thing I have ever used Bryce for, but at that cost its like a shareware. I have used a DEM to make a terrain and then assembled aerial photos and/or satallite photos and map them on. The results can be very convincing. But remember you will be dealing with a very large area, so coming in close to a site and building may require a more detailed patch in the surface/imagemaps
quizzy
You could try this: http://www.habware.at/max4/dem2max4.zip its for max4 so it should work for viz4?? Maybe..
