demo38
We're thinking about purchasing 3D Studio Max 5, but have seen some posts here saying that it's unstable? Any thoughts? Or, known causes? Thanks!
Craig Ramsay
Hmmm it's not that unstable. It does sometimes crash on me but to be honest it's not very often and I never lose any work (the auto-backup facility works well). Cheers Craig
Craig Ramsay
Typical I should have touched some wood because max has just crashed on me twice :angeuhoh:
plastic
max runs very stable here. if it crashes it's usually some plugins fault. or bad hardware.
Craig Ramsay
You could be right, I was using brazil and tree storm at the time Craig

demo38
OK. Hot off the presses... I just got off of the phone with Discreet's East Coast Sales Rep asking about the stability issues of Max 5. She informed me that they were very aware of the bugs in 5, causing crashes, system instability. But, (there's always a but...) they released a patch for 5 on their website just last Wednesday, which she said, according to her Users group, has taken care of "most" of the issues with the bugs that were reported. PS - I was also told that this is "THE LAST WEEK MAX 4 IS AVAILABLE." It's being pulled from the shelves. Be warned.
Hazdaz
"Typical I should have touched some wood because max has just crashed on me twice " Anyways, concerning what DEMO said, he heard it from a SALES rep. Nuf, said. They'll say ANYTHING to make a sale. From my experience, MAX is far from the most stable piece of SW, yet also not the most buggy. Its weird, sometimes, its days between crashes, while other days its every other hour. Also, 5.1 was released like a week or two ago. Have heard that it both solves some problems and CAUSES others. Thats always a "reassuring" thing to hear. I'm hesitant to even bother trying it out. DEMO, if your really thinking about buying MAX - why not install and play with the demo version for a little bit and see how stable you think it is. demo38
quizzy - good to know. according to the packaging, it's the demo for 5. i'll have to make a call...
johnnymac
if you give discreet another call ask for mike miller. he is a pioneer to the 3d world and i think he actually created 3d. the world used to be entirely in 2d until mike came around and added the extrude modifier. he was also the one who added technicolor to the world when everything was in black and white.
