i just had a quick question,

does anybody model in sketchup, then import into viz or max?

once i import into viz/max an exported 3ds sketchup model, i cant seem to apply materials to it.

all it does is apply to the whole building.

is there a way to apply material to different faces?

thanks

neill

Not 100% sure, but make sure you are exporting the sketchup model as individual objects and not one object.

If that doesn't work, select the object, go to the MODIFY panel, select ELEMENT, click on an object and it should highlight as the object, not the entire building (or whatever). You can either apply a material there, or right click on it and select DETACH, and make it its own selectable object.

I'd try the export settings, first though.

Oh, I've never used Sketchup, so I really don't know :) Hope my guesses help!

Hey let me in on this one once someone finds out how the geometry comes in! We have an Architect

that just cranks out incredible stuff with this software and it would be great if it exports good geometry that can be mapped well and doesn't have a billion faces and triangles!

Try this out - before exporting apply colors, materials, etc. in SketchUp. Then right click on a face you wish to apply materials to in Viz. Select the option to 'select objects with similar materials.' This will highlight all faces in the dwg (or should I say sketch) with the same materials. You can then group these by selecting edit>group. Do this for all your diff. materials then when you export make sure the 2 sided objects option is checked. You should then, in Viz, be able to select individual 'groups' to apply materials to. Hope this helps

All you need to do in SketchUp is group each part separately (which you should develop a habit of doing, anyway, as it keeps surfaces from sticking together), and it should ungroup just as it was grouped, especially if you export as a .3ds. One thing, though; in 3DS format, the original SketchUp textures won't come in as they were in SketchUp. You get the base or background color, but not the linework, poche', texture, etc. It works that way exporting from SketchUp to Bryce 3D, anyway.
