with scanline you need a very dense grid to get results which are okay. it´s not to compare to vray. and brazil will have a good displacement feature in 2.0, but not now. the displacement of vray is actually the best and fastest on the market (except renderman, which is nearly equal ;-) ) the only displacement under max which has a change compared to vray is mental ray. when you want to copy the vray displacement, you to build the mesh ;-)

Just to add a little more... for example for displacing a rectangle, the best results will happen from dividing the plane into squares at the object creation level. A sqaure polygon will smooth and optimize well. As good as Mental Rays, which is very good, however it will take longer to render with the scaline in max.
