planar does not follow the direction of the curvilinear street kerb neither the cubic mapping. In 3dmax, when ticking the generate mapping coordinate when creating an object, the map follows the direction of the geometry being created. is there such a thing like in lw?

yup UV map only, that is the only way, other than painting on a flat planar map.... well technically there is is a way of modeling your object straight, for then map and then deform/morph into the requested shape... that will be another way....
