dleon
Anybody have any idea when we will see MentalRay 3.3 on 3ds Max? Do we have to wait for Max 7? Will we see a Max 6.5? When? This is the biggest news that has ever hit the industry. Now we don't have to have RenderFarms anymore. One powerful box equiped with a Quadro FX 4000 can do the work of 20 or more dual XEON boxes. Personally, I jumping out of my frickin' skin over this news. I wish I had a pair of clean shorts right now.

WOW, is that really true, i did read some interesting things indeed about this new version. But susch specs are truly amazing, i thought the speed was escpecially drastically increased concerning fur/grass/hair and such things. But does practically each scene render that fast compared to the old one ?? Btw the new mentalray is implemented in the new maya 6!!! so i guess max can't for long stay behind on this... Fernando Lino
I'm not sure but, I read before in this forum that the video card doesn't work on the rendering process.
dleon
The old news is old new. Indeed it is true that all rendering was done on the CPU... Until yesterday. This travesty was a fact of life because GPUs weren't really programable. They were merely dedicated hardware designed to accelerate two fixed definition APIs (OpenGL and DirectX). Those days are officially over. With the NV30 core, NVIDIA opened up the GPU to external programming. We all remember Cg, right? Well guess what? NV40 has more raw computational power than your average supercomputer, and it is even more programable than before. Colleges and universities are using paralleled NV30's to do calcs that supercomputers used to do. MentalImages is the first major render engine around to convert to the GPU, but this should turn into a stampeed soon. Everyone else has to convert or die now. Renderman is dead if Pixar doesn't move it as quickly as possible to the GPU. Dave
