Jape
Hey all, im having some problems extruding certain splines, i have the wooden frame of a curain window in which i want to model my glazing. Beceause there is one frame that has an arc in it, i thought i would detach the arc to an shape, then complete the spline for the linear parts and then extrude. But it will only extrude in the z-axis, how can i adjust the normals (cause my guess is these are not pointing towards the right direction) so that it is extruding right ???, ill try posting a screenshot to clarify it a bit... rivoli
did you correctly weld the points? sometimes a spline behaves like that if it's not closed, anyway try forcing 2 sides to check if in this way you can see the solid.
Jape
Though i do know hot to solve it, i.e. just tracing over the lines with new splines, im wondering if there is a way around retracing all the lines thought this all costs precious time.... screenshot attached .... Jape
Thx for your fast reply Rivoli!, I did doublecheck my welds and that does not seem to be givving the problem. Also it actually doesn't generate a solid beceause it just stretches my spline instead of giving it a thickness (check screenshot) thats why my guess was normals... Also tried changing the reference coordinate sys before extruding, but that also didn't work, Keep in mind though that i detached the shape that i used from the curtain window frame and used it for the glass plane,
rivoli
well, i didn't get what your problem was. forget my previous post. where did you get that shape from? it looks like you're extruding a mesh, not a spline.
Jape
No prob. Indeed i also think the problem is beceause the spline i used is detached from the mesh (curtain window frame). But im totally in the dark as how i can ''clean" my detached spline so i can reuse it for an extrusion..
rivoli
if you don't need thickness i'd try to convert your shape in a editable poly, extrude the polygon and then delete the cap. you should get just the sides of your extrusion. you can also section (edit: make a section, i don't know if section can be used as a verb) your window frame, create a shape from your section (which is a spline) and then use it as you like. Jape
no no, i do need thickness, only the problem is that whatever i do, or how i do it, it always extrudes like in the screenshot, flat, where i want thickness. Sorry bou that maybe i wasn't very clear, i made a new screenshot so maybe now its a little bit more clear about what i want to do...
rivoli
well, then i'd make a section out of your frame. it'll save time (won't have to draw new splines) and should work fine. once you get the section give the spline an outline as thick as you need and then extrude it. Jape
WOW, indeed that is the smarter thing to do Rivoli. I hardly ever used section before but now im beginning to see your point. Very handy for this job, and now i am getting good extusions, still need to practice a bit with this tool but (as i have a lot other planes to do also) this will save a lot of time!! BIG thx for the tip Rivoli, you helped me out a bunch
