Crazy Homeless Guy
a friend just sent this to me... i am a little skeptical that all of there ambitions will be met. i tend to think that it will wind up as just another format to deal with. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/04/21/intel_u3d/
Ernest Burden III
i am a little skeptical that all of there ambitions will be met. Thank you for the link! Another attempt at a 'universal' 3D format. But with these players --(notable absence Autodesk (would ADSK be mentioned only as one of 'over 30 others'))-- it could work. This article does not go into 'features'--which matter a lot to me. SOMEONE is going to impliment a universal CAD format to finally put Autodesk in its place (that place being just another CAD program among many). This could be it. Autodesk will not do it. There is so much that would need to be in such a filetype that I doubt this one will replace any existing ones, but let's hope for the best! Brian Cassil
I have to agree that it sounds like a lot to hope for, but won't really happen for quite some time at best. Companies like microsoft and intel stand a lot to gain from such a format but companies like autodesk do not, so I wonder what thier incentive to cooperate would really be. It might be very difficult to achieve without thier support, seems even more unlikely given autodesks history of not playing nice.

The only issue is how much 'in bed' those top players are with Autodesk. No-one actually needs Autodesk's cooperation, help or blessing to do this. Autodesk is the classic naked emperor. All we have to do, as an industry (and that MUST include the architects) is say "listen, mate, you look awfully silly standing there naked and telling us what to do". In fact, you or I could easily write down a list of 'must have' features for a universal filetype to be useful. Nvidia (oops, that should read Intel, right?) can tell how to make something work well with hardware, Adobe knows how to write cross-platform, cross application stuff that actually works. And Microsoft knows how to force just about anything on the masses. It would really be up to people like us to adopt or reject the new format. All Autodesk can do is adopt or reject it, which they then try to force on their minions, either way.
Brian Cassil
Hey Ernest, I like what your saying and I'm on board 100%. "All Autodesk can do is adopt or reject it, which they then try to force on their minions, either way." The only problem is they are pretty darn good at doing just that. So lets say they adopt it and force it on thier minions. We all win. I think a more likely scenario is that they reject it and continue to force their format as THE standard, and of course the masses follow.
Brian Cassil
Well, I suppose it will depend on just how dedicated Microsoft will be. Like you said they could force the hand of ADSK.
graphix
Well wouldn't that be nice.... I am tired of getting 1000 different formats of drawings/3d models and having to search the net, sometimes to no avail, to convert a file to AutoCAD or to Viz 4. graphix
