MegaPixel
Surely there are some of you who don't do Architectural Modeling all of the time. I just happened acrossed some Engine Exhaust and Smoke system tutorials on the Net and told myself that I had to play a little. But before I get started with the F/X tutorials, I thought I better create something a little more detailed then a cone to represent a Rocket engine. So here's what I've thrown together so far. It is a WIP however - I'm thinking about adding some outriggers on the sides with more maneuvering engines and stuff. Anyhow, I kind of cheated when I modeled the outer Hull shapes. I made them in Solidworks rather then MAX (Happens to be my more comfortable modeling app). So... I imported the objects into MAX via .stl format, used autosmooth with a 30 deg. smooth angle default. As you can see, there are some occasional smoothing anomilies, not many, but they need cleaned up none the less. Normally when I model houses and such, I never run into the kind of advanced curvature smoothing issue. My question for you is how do you recommend cleaning an imported model like this with respect to smoothing groups? When do you know to use different angles and where to start and stop them? I've always struggled to understand just exactly how they work. Thanks in advance and plz offer some suggestions. thanks - Mega

MegaPixel
Just thought I'd post my Modeling Tweaks to this thing. Now I believe I'm ready to texture this thing and compose a compelling scene... Any thoughts?

skogskalle
awsome! I really like the wing you added, looks mighty fine =) cant really complain about anything at this point.... make sure you post the textured version though, its gonna look great. I allways model everything in MAX, but Im afraid Im no master when it comes to smoothing groups. Im sure there are some guidelines or rules you can follow, but I usually go by the old Trial n error technique.... takes time, but sooner or later it always ends up ok....
