cant print >:(

Recommended Posts

can someone please help?

i've just aquired a HP laserjet 4m plus from work. it's a good few years old, but works perfectly.

i connected it directly to my computer (running win XP home) via the paralell port.

XP automatically reckognised new hardware and installed and set up the printer for me :)

but when i print nothing happens. i press the print icon, the job in hand spools as per normal, then sends to printer. all as you'd expect. but the printer itself just continues to display 'ready' on the display. and does absolutely nothing.

it wont print test prints or nothing. (unless i do a printer diagnostic). it worked in work thisafternoon, why cant i get it to work at home?

i even took out the network card from it to simplify matters, but the printer just sits there as if nothing is being processed.

any ideas, bearing in mind i'm not technically minded here?

The only thing I could think of is that the printer itself is configured to use the network card for printing as compared to the parallel port. Do you have a manual you can look through? If not, you could poke through the menus on the printer and look there. Been a while since I used an HP, so I don't even remember if this is an option or not.

thast what im thinking, but i cant see anywhere on the printer menues to re-configure that. also, if i remove the network card from the printer it elliminates these options automatically. but it still wont print.

wda - thnx for advice :) i already downloaded the xp drivers but still nowt happens. it's almost as if there's a break in the cable (but there isnt) someone mentioned to me to check out the bios of bi-directional commands. perhaps i'll look into that.
