Michael Earley
Hello.. sorry if some of these are real Duh questions, but.... 1. What is the difference between a workstation and a normal computer? 2. When places like Dell give prices on machines like the 450, does that include 2 proc or just room for 2? 3. I have built many normal computers.. basicly just plugged in all the parts no tweaking or anything, I have looked at alot of the post by greg and others and was wonder if i am asking for trouble to make my own dual processor machine? I live in the south of italy and there are no decent computer stores, you have to order everything you need including a stick of ram, so I will be ordering all the parts from the states and shipping them so I can get what ever I need. I have looked at a few of the sites like box and the others.. the price is out of my range, so I need to either build a box of find a happy medium. I did see some good prices on the dell refurb site, but not sure what I am looking at as far as hardware. I use max and vray for arch rendering and have been getting more and more animation work, I have 3 p3 with 512mg and one p4 with 1 gig of ram and none of these can do much, it is time for a upgrade, but the rates we charge here are much lower than the states, so price is a issue. Can anyone tell me what is a good basic dual machine for this kind of work? How much ram is the min, what is a good processor, and so on. If it is possible to build a machine, any recomendations for mother board, processors, ram, video card and so on? Sorry to be so vauge, but I have no idea what I need. Fernando Lino
If you want to upgrade I'd go to 64-bit workstation maybe Opteron or Athlon 64...I have an Opteon...and it's very fast....I read that AMD has better floating point than Intel....so It's faster in CAD /3D and cheaper!!!!! about the memory ...min (2) 1GB..because with windows 64 you'll can use more than 2GB per process...four slots=4GB ram (future upgrade) Video min 128MB..quadro 700 o better...using the new technology Go to http://www.xicomputer.com pick a dual processor and check out the components!! Good luck!!!
