new user seeking speed help for 3dsMax

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I'm having a problem with 3dsMax 5.1. This began at the exact same time as the creation of my first character rig, specifically, when I added a Spline IK modifier to a short series of bones. Any time I try to adjust the bones, it takes an unearthly long time to display the changes in the viewports, and I cannot accurately adjust any limbs, even with everything but the bones in question hidden and the bones displayed as boxes only. (this happens in several files i created in case it was just that one file.)

This happens with any file with a character rig I have tried, but the same files operate perfectly when I transfer them to the 3dsMax on my school's computers (also 5.1). My computer is far better than their computers. This happens regardless of whether I am using D3D, OpenGL, or heidi. No other applications seem affected in any way.

To fix this, I've upgraded to all the latest drivers for Mobo, video card, sound card, and BIOS. I've also eliminated my Norton Antivirus 2003, and I've switched between DirectX 9.0, OpenGL, and software options in Max preferences. Nothing so far has helped. Other than these upgrades, performed yesterday, nothing has changed on my computer in months (including 3dsMax.).

Here is the system information:

OS: W2k

DirectX 9.0b

Processor: Intel P4 2.4Ghz (hyper-threading enabled)

Mobo: Intel D865PERL (onboard sound disabled, AGP Aperture = 8x)

Video: eVGA Nvidia GeForce FX 5200

Sound: Audigy 2

Memory: 2 DIMMs 512Mb ATP registered Non-ECC unbuffered 333Mhz DDR (sync 6ns, Dual-channel configuration)

Cooling: 2 fans (rear and processor) Processor zone temp: 43C, 109F

System zone 1 temp: 34C, 93F

System Zone 2 temp: 39C 102F

Power Supply: 450-watt

I am not overclocking anything, and I have no 3rd party plugins for 3dsMax.

My C-Dilla version is 3.27

Any help would be appreciated, because I have projects due that depend on my being able to use Max at home.

Thanks.
