i really need help.

Recommended Posts

Ok, i dont know if this is a hardware problem or a software one, let me tell you about it:

About 4 days ago, i was working on my PC and chatting with Messenger, suddenly, i couldn’t type anymore on the chat, everytime I typed a setter the computer made a BEEP sound (those error beeps, not produced by my sound system speakers, but by the internal built in speaker on the PC), after a few seconds i tried again and this time it was ok, i kept working and chatting, a few minutes later, it happened again, everytime i tried to press a key, the BEEP error sound goes and theres no way i could type anything, like if the keyboard wasnt responding, I just reboot.

After that reboot, Windows starts, but i wasnt able to use the keyboard, i couldnt type any letter – along with the BEEP sound, i reboot one more time, this time windows didnt load, it got stuck on the DOS screen with the following message:

“KB/ interface error, press F1 to continue”

How could i press F1 if the keyboard wasnt working?...i got really mad and frustrated, I thought it could be my keyboard that broke, so i switched it with my second PC keyboard, but it didnt work also, however in the other PC both keyboards works, so now i know it isnt the keyboard but either a software problem or a hardware problem with the MB and the piece where you plug the keyboard, this is what i think, i know nothing about PCs.

About 3 hours later, i decide to try again, turn on the PC, same DOS error, i kinda move around a little the keyboard plugin, turn on again, and this time it works, I was working that day ok.

Next day I had BEEP sounds- non working keyboard at some times, I just wait a few seconds and press the keys again, and they work, pretty strange, now im treating my KB like if it was a “human being”, i press the keys gently and not as fast, like fearing it gets upset or something.

I worked without problems until today, same problem again, this time sometimes i pressed a key, makes the BEEP sound but instead of not responding the keyboard it makes a different letter, I mean, i press the “k” letter and it shows a “g” or something,, now is not responding at all, all i get when pressing keys is that annoying BEEP sound.

So im typing this message on my other PC, to ask for help, any idea what could it be?

I know the keyboard is fine, so is either a software problem (either BIOS, or windows or virus, dont know) or is a hardware problem with the mother board, with the piece where you attach the keyboard.

By the way, while i was typing this, i tried to press keys on the problem PC, sometimes works, but 3 or 4 “presses” later it sounds the BEEP and it either doesnt shows anything on screen or it shows the wrong key i pressed.

My specs:

AMD Athlon 1.7XP

Mobo: K7T266 pro2

RAM: 512 MB ddr

WindowsXP Professional

Could be a couple of things:

1. Could be a key stuck down.

Solution-clean your keyboard or buy a new one.

2. Could be a loose/dirty connection

Solution-clean the contacts(radio tuner cleaner) or buy a new one

3. Could be a bad keyboard all together

Solution-Buy a new keyboard

4. Could be the Motherboard connection.

Solution - buy a USB keyboard

CAUTION if this is the case. If you do have a loose mobo connector don't go wiggling it around, all you are gonna do is make it worse.

Because of the loose connection there is a small possibility that it may end up crossing 2 points on the mobo that shouldn't be and simply frying the mobo and in worse case everything. MIND you I only saw that happen once in the 4 years I was an IT tech.

OK, i bought a new USB keyboard, ba news is a few hours later my ps2 mouse stopped working....and since both the keyboard socket and the mouse socket are next to each other i just think the whole piece went kaput!

Anywyas, i bought an USB mouse already, now i have a little issue.

Everytime i turn on my PC, the DOS screen, displays the Keyboard error:

KB/ interface error. Press F1 to continue.

I think this is because the PC keeps looking fo rthe keyboard in the ps2 socket and not the USB one, how to bypass this?, so i dont keep pressing f1 everytime i turn on my PC.

ok, this is starting to become like the twilight zone of PCs....check this out:

After buying the usb keyboard and mouse, everything was ok for 1 day, then after 1 reboot, windows didnt load and the DOS interface gave me this error:

"the following file is missing or corrupt \system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Install a copy of the damage file"

Ok, i searched in the internet, and the general advice was to reboot the PC with the windowsXP CD on, boot form the CD and repair or copy the damaged file, if that doesnt works, do a fresh install.

Well, before we dod that (i called a friend who knows more than me about PCs), we were wondering about a strange sound, it was like one of those "bad earth" connection sounds, like interference, it came fomr the internal built in speaker, so we thought that the HD was busted or some other hardware part, so we started unplugging every peripheral, cd, hd, sound card, LAN card, USB boards, even a memory stick, and tried to reboot everytime, untill we left the PC with the minimum req. vid. card, 1 memory stick and thats it, everytime the weird sound and the ntoskrnl.exe error appeared and no windows loaded.

Ok, we have no idea what it was, so we keep on trying, on one lucky try, windows loaded, and we made a file backup, and were about to do a HD format and a fresh windows XP install, but when we try to boot the Windows CD, it didnt.

Now comes the really strange part:

-Theres no way that the PC boots form the windows CD, why?..no idea.

-The USB keyboard only comes alive after windows loaded, not at startup, so getting iunto the BIOS is impossible unless.....

-....the older ps2 keyboard is plugged also!, thats right, when i have both keyboards plugged, the USB keyboard works during startup, so i can get into the BIOS, but if the ps2 keyboard is disonnected the USB one doesnt works.

Now, this is freaky, finally, im able to run WindowsXP without problems, like anything didnt happened, but i have both keyboard plugged, of course the ps2 one doenst works (the KB is good, is the socket inthe MB tha is bad), and even the weird sound, was because of that, if i unplugged the ps2 keyboard the sound starts an of course windows wont load, if i plugged the ps2 keyboard the sound dissapears and windows loads ok.

Any idea?

As I would tell alot of my customers in my days as a computer repair tech.

"your house has bad chi"

chaulk it up to the odd wonders of computing. Though I would highly recommend starting a search for a new mobo as you never know when it may go and take everything with it.

news update:

Last night I foprmated the Hard Drive and did a clean and fresh windows installation, but the ntoskrnl.exe error keeps showing up.

I can load windows tho, if i have the second old ps2 keyboard plugged, so to resume heres where im now:

-2 keyboards plugged (usb+ps2) = no ntsokrnl.exe error and windows loads just fine.

-only the USB keyboard pluged = ntoskrnl.exe error and windows doesnt loads.

Tonight im gonna update the BIOS, if that doenst solves the issue, i guess i just gonna leave both keyboards plugged all the time, its and odd thing, butr it does the trick.
