Help for a beginner

I am new to C4D and have a basic problem. I'm trying to select objects in the view window by clicking on them with the live selection arrow. My problem is I can't seem to be very accurate. Is there a way to change the selection to show solid rather than the bounding box? I seem to be missing something here. Is the only way to select accurately to use the objects window?
