MJL Imaging
ok, now, i've taken on the tast of flaring those walls I mentioned in my last thread, now my question is,...why is it, when I loft a profile, it doesn't take on light the way it should. in other words, the corners aren't crisp like regular corners should be, i've gone through this before with other lofted objects where they generate shadows and shine when they shouldn't. MJL Imaging
to add to my question, it's just the corners, where the lofted profile meets a vertex that changes the direction of the lofted profile
STRAT
how about post up a clear image showing the problem?

STRAT
and the mesh looks clean in wire frame? (can we see that too?) i'd suggest welding together some of those edges and clearing their smoothing groups.
MJL Imaging
the lofted mesh looks perfect, nothing looks out of alignment or anything.

Brian Cassil
You need to apply a smooth modifier, check auto smooth and then adjust the angle so that the faces which are slightly "curved" appear smooth and the others are sharp. I'd say the default 30% is about right for what I've seen.
Brian Cassil
Also, to make a more efficient mesh, check in the loft parameters check optimize shapes and set the path steps to 0. You will probably reduce 90% of your faces by doing just that.
MJL Imaging
Brian, thank you so much for the help, that did it! And thanks to you too Strat for being there right away to start answering my questions. what would I do without this forum!?!? I'll be sure to post this project, if it ever gets completed. It's tough to get clients to spend the money sometimes, ya know? Anyway, have a good one you two.
pmanahan
I agree with Brian Cassil. It looks like a smoothing problem to me also. pmanahan
cullen
Michael can you post the image of that corner now that the problem is fixed. I guess I never really pinpointed exactly what you were talking about. thanks, crw
Sawyer
I am not infront of max right now but I was looking at this problem last night. The f1 help really deals with this well I suggest looking into that when you can. Regardless I will misquote it here but there are options in the modify panel of the loft that control how the loft takes corners and if you look in help (max 5) there is an example of a loft used on a picture frame with odd smoothing just like you post. all that aside if the surface mod works ...
