notebook SONY GRT996vp

Recommended Posts

Hey i have nearly the same (GRT916Z) but it has a 3.06 and 1GB DRAM...

except that it is the same computer.

Very good in modeling applications and opengl display... (Rhino, autocad, 3dsmax....)

The screen is VERY good (the gamma is a bit high... has to low it very much)

and it DOES NOT CRASH.... NEVER that's a good point ;)

K-Mike.. do you do any animation with it? I am getting a ibm laptop and did not know if you can have them running 24 hours a day for days without overheating them? I want to add it to my render farm but was a little worried about it

thanks

michael

Hi Michael ;)

For animation and big stills, we choosed to have a farm here. So i use this laptop only for stills.... but my stills often take 14-15 hours to render, and the laptop does not burn :) or overheat... the only time it overheated is when i let it "on" in its suitcase... it had no ventilation, so it's normal...

In fact u can really use it like a static workstation, i mean u can ask it the same things... if it's what u want to know....Huhuhu... it seems i need to improve my english ;)

Hope it was clear

Bye

I had a bad experience with rendering with my Toshiba laptop......

I have a Toshiba laptop desktop replacement, I used it for rendering scenes with 10-20 hours... there is thermalgrease between the cpu and the cooler after a while it dries becuase of several hours of renderings... After that Laptop even shuts down regular DVD playing or internet surfing.. The cpu part gets really hot because of bad cooling, the grease no longer works properly... May be sony is better I don't know...

I sent it to service center they changed the grease and it works fine right now. I no longer render more than 15 min. I also bought Antec cooler,

it works and keep my laptop cool.. it makes some noise raises my laptop but ok.

In general I wouldn't recommend a sony notebook. I worked in the IT and repair industry for a very long time and have seen many a sony on my "slab" When they break they are the most expensive to get fixed and are generally one of the worst constructed notebooks out there.

If I HAD to recommend a company to get a notebook from it would be Toshiba, IBM Thinkpad, Dell Latitude(NOT Inspiron).

Now speaking from the rendering side of my mind I would highly recommend a desktop over a notebook. You can get way way more bang for your buck.

And yes notebooks don't do so well running at 100% load for long periods of time. Overheating will occur and GREATLY shorten the lifespan of the device, and will VOID your warrenty(considered abuse of the machine), yes we as ITs can tell.

Muzzy.. how much did that cooler cost? I read the article and did a quick seach for it and did not find it.

graphix.. I used to work for the UN Africa and we used toshibas all the time.. they seemed to be more drop resistant and also better at keeping the dirt and sand out. I was just curious as to your last comment about how It people know a machine was overheated from long use, what kind of signs would indicate that? I have a farm now with 4 computers and really would like to add the 2 laptops but dont want to loose the warrenty on them.

The first sign is typically the cooling fan is still working. The second is the coloration on the chip is different. When a chip is working under normal conditions it discolors a certain way. However if it has been exposed to extream temps for long periods of time but not reaching the "kill temp" it discolors a different way. Its something an experienced eye can catch. There are other signs as well but that is usually my give away.

Notebooks are simply NOT designed to work at 100% load for long periods of time.

Why do you want to add notebooks to your renderfarm? If it is a space issue you can purchase some really nice mini HTPC type computer systems or if you like buy 2U rackmount systems. If your budget is allowing for 2 notebooks you should be able to swing atleast 4 2U systesm and more of any other variety.

Sorry for the redondance, but whith laptop u can really render preview stills whith big render times, whithout any problem of overheating.....

i'm ok whith u when u say u cannot simply have a laptop and "basta", but if u have additional material for final renderings and animations, u can ask ur laptop some big preview renderings, and work fine whith it on ur projects, on devloppiong them, searching for colors, textures, light, etc...whithout being at work ... very cool no ?

i had many workstations, customized ones, standard ones, .....

i know their capacities in terms of everiday work... the laptop (at least my "sony") has not less capacities... good graphik card, good proc, ventilation, screens better and better... really good solution for everiday work.

Final renderings, i agree, needs more ressources, but for everiday it's very good.

BYe :D
