Why max 5 kicked my max 6's arse.

This is from a thread about PC speed by kris "Test your PC rendering speed!!!" to test the speed of different PC's rendering a Max file. I started a new thread because I thought it was a seperate enough issue.

When we switched from Max4 to Max5 our rendering times of an animation we were working on went from approx 1 minute up to over 2 minutes a frame. we were not to happy about it and moved back to Max4 for that project. Since then we have isolated the problem to grouping. We are doing airplane interiors and would group our scene to a few master groups, all the seats and all the sidewalls, etc. This worked great in Max4 but now we have to open all our master groups up in Max5 which makes it more time consuming to light link. I have not used Max6 but I hope this is of some help.

Do all MAX files render slower in MAX 6? Does it render slower all frames of the animation?

 

Honestly, using 1 simple file is not enough evidence that MAX 6 renders slower. The reasons could be many, but with one single file it's simply impossible to know why it's slower.

 

If you want to evaluate something like that, do as we do at Discreet: render a bunch of different files, each targeted to a different area, render a couple production oriented files, and in the end compare both the final bitmap result and the render time. With that result you can come here and ask me why is this or that case slower, and this or that case faster.
