Viz 2005 - Linked Geomentry can't be grouped

Hi,

I have a copy of Viz2005 for evaluation and apparently any geometry that is derived form linked AutoCAD data cannot be grouped or assembled.

I suppose it is bug in the software. Has anyone come across this phenomenon?

Thanks,

Lightning

Please take a look at the help topic named "Restrictions on editing AutoCAD geometry". It lists a series of things that cannot be done to linked object.

Grouping is not explicitly listed there, but grouping changes parent/child relationships, so a linked object cannot be grouped.

It worked fine on Viz 2,3 and 4, so unless this is part of making the "Filelink" work "better" I can't understnad this other than a Bug.

I don't have the recenlty added "Filelink" option to Max 6 so I can only wonder how it works there, because as I said, the "regular" Max 6 groups this object just fine.

This is not a bug. This limitation was introduced because grouping objects is one of the reasons why geometry moved upon reload.

MAX 6 with File Link will also not allow grouping. MAX 6 by itself does allow grouping, but that file will produce incorrect results if you bring it back to VIZ to reload.

Thanks Alexander, I understnd it now.

But what is the alternative? at the moment I'm using "Selection sets" instead of the groups.

I like to name each object and I really don't like the way the object selection window is looking right now after importing 25 ploylines that create the door frames in a corridor....
